Reading a competitor's ad library correctly: active is not the same as profitable
The Meta Ad Library is free, public, and the best research tool most personal injury firms never use properly. The most common mistake is simple: assuming that because a competitor's ad is still running, it must be working.
Why "still active" tells you almost nothing
An ad can run for months while quietly losing money. Budgets get set and forgotten. Agencies leave losers on to pad a report. Lead-generation operators run wide nets on purpose. Longevity by itself is not proof of profit, especially in a vertical where the real outcome, a signed case, happens weeks after the click and is invisible to anyone looking from the outside.
The signals that actually mean something
You cannot see a competitor's cost per case, but you can read intent from structure:
- Variations of one concept. When a page runs eight versions of the same hook with small changes, that concept is likely working. Money follows winners into iteration.
- A single creative running a long time. One ad live and unchanged for months usually means it is carrying the account. That is a stronger signal than a library full of one-offs.
- Where the click goes. The landing page and form tell you more than the ad. A qualification-first form behind the ad signals a sophisticated operator; a bare payout page signals a volume play.
- Disclosure discipline. Persistent attorney-advertising labels and honest dramatization or synthetic-content disclosures signal someone who intends to keep the account. Their absence signals someone who does not care if it gets banned.
What to do with what you find
Use the library to map angles, not to copy ads. Note which hooks appear again and again across serious advertisers, then build your own compliant version rather than lifting theirs. Copying a payout-hook ad because it is "still running" is how firms inherit both the poor case quality and the bar exposure. See why those ads produce the worst cases.
The thing the library cannot show you
No amount of competitor research replaces measuring your own funnel to the signed case. The library shows you what people are running; only your own attribution chain shows you what is actually producing cases. We walk through both, your competitors and your own numbers, on a call.
We will read your market's ad library with you and map the angles worth testing.
